A native of Queensland, Australia, Geoffrey Rush (born July 6, 1951) received an arts degree and began his theatre career at Brisbane's Queensland Theatre Company. During his lengthy and successful stage career, he also made his film debut in Hoodwink (1981).Rush became an international celebrity for his portrayal of pianist David Helfgott in Shine (1996), for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. He followed this with a series of costume dramas, including Les Miserables (1998), Elizabeth (1998), 1998's Shakespeare in Love (for which he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination) and 2000's Quills (earning him another Best Actor Oscar nomination).
More recently, Rush has played a variety of parts in The Tailor of Panama (2001), Frida (2002), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and as actor Peter Sellers in HBO's The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004).
